Asteroid Models from the Pan-STARRS Photometry

چکیده
We present simulations on the asteroid photometric data that will be provided by the PanSTARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System). The simulations were performed using realistic shape and light-scattering models, random orientation of spin axes, and rotation periods in the range 2–24 h. We show that physical models of asteroids can be reconstructed from this data with some limitations (possible multiple pole solutions). We emphasize the potential of sparse photometric data to produce models of a large number of asteroids within the next decade and we outline further tests with fast and slow rotators, tumblers, and binary asteroids.

Physical models of asteroids from sparse photometric data
We present an overview of our work on shape and spin state determination of asteroids from photometric data sparse in time. Our results are based on simulations that were performed using realistic shape and light-scattering models and time sequences that will be provided by Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System). We show some typical examples of physical model reconst...
متن کاملA New Low-Mass Eclipsing Binary from SDSS-II
We present observations of a new low-mass double-lined eclipsing binary system discovered using repeat observations of the celestial equator from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II. Using near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy we have measured the properties of this short-period [P=0.407037(14) d] system and its two components. We find the following parameters for the two components: M1...
متن کاملX-shooter search for outgassing from Main Belt Comet P/2012 T1 (Pan-STARRS)
Context. Main Belt Comets are a recently identified population of minor bodies with stable asteroid-like orbits but cometary appearances. Sublimation of water ice is the most likely mechanism for their recurrent activity (i.e. dust tails and dust comae), although there has been no direct detection of gas. These peculiar objects could hold the key to the origin of water on Earth. Aims. In this p...
متن کاملThe Next Decade Of Solar System Discovery With Pan-STARRS
The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) at the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy is a funded project to repeatedly survey the entire visible sky to faint limiting magnitudes (mR ∼ 24). It will be composed of four 1.8m diameter apertures each outfitted with fast readout orthogonal transfer Giga-pixel CCD cameras. A single aperture prototype telescopes i...
متن کاملResolving Ambiguities in Shape and Pole Models of 832 Karin
The Karin family is a main-belt family of newborn asteroids, resulting from a collision 5.8 ±0.2 Myr ago. The dynamically young age of the Karin family makes it an ideal candidate for study of the timescales of several post-formational processes, including YORP thermal effects. As the presumed parent body of the Karin family, 832 Karin is especially of interest in the study. Currently, the aste...
